Opening Day of Beaver Baseball

SEBASTIAN SMITH ’11

On Thursday, April 2nd the Beaver Baseball team took to the field for the first time this season against Gann Academy. Shane Bourque took the mound and gave up one unearned run in the first. But Beaver came back with a bang in the bottom of that inning when Dan Fellman hit a towering homerun over the right field fence. Gann came back, though, with three more runs over the next two innings. Dan Fellmen hit a triple his next time up and scored on a groundout by Shane Borque in the bottom of the fifth(Fellmen was intentionally walked his next two at bats). Garret Ekpunobi drove in two runs in the fifth to tie the game at four. Sebastian Smith finished the game for Beaver, giving up one run in three innings which came in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.

Beaver found themselves in a hole in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and no one on. Jeff Weinman drew a walk, which rattled the opposing pitcher. He proceeded to walk three more batters which drove Wienman in. The game was tied with the bases loaded and two outs, Garret Ekpunobi, who had already driveen in two runs during the game, stepped in to the box. Ekpunobi smacked a double into left field which drove in the winning run. Garret was carried off the field, and finished with 2 hits and 3 RBIs in the game. If anyone deserves an athletic accolade, its Garret Ekpunobi.
