Beaver Ultimate Out Runs VCS Flying Turtles: 12-4

TYLER STARR ’10

Beaver Country Day SchoolThis past weekend, The Beaver Ultimate team played in the 5th annual St. Johnsbury NEPSUL tournament in upstate Vermont. This was Beaver’s first tournament of the year, and they were ready for the challenge at hand. Fifteen minutes after losing a very defensive game to Hotchkiss, Beaver played against the Vermont Commonwealth School (VCS). Beaver started with some fire in their step and took an early lead. As the game progressed, Beaver’s lock down zone defense shut down VCS’s offensive production. Juniors Buzz Haverty, Geoff Mayer, and Sam Lynch played wonderfully. Senior Ben Jacobson had three amazing catches that propelled Beaver’s passing game.

The team ended the tournament with a 1-3 record losing to Philips Andover (currently ranked fifth in Massachusetts) and Northfield Mount Hermon 15-14 in a heart breaker. In the NMH game, Beaver was down 12-13 when the soft cap was called. The soft cap is a rule implemented to shorten the games that makes it so if either team reaches two more points than the score of the leading team at the time of the soft cap, then the game will end. Beaver came out with gusto and scored two quick points to lead 14-13. After a few lucky catches, NMH had tied the game and then scored the game winner on a very uncharacteristic Beaver turnover.

Overall, this was a fabulous experience for all the Beaver players and athletic department. What will be remembered the most from this tournament are Zibrak’s ghost story, the two four hour bus rides, and the heart and hustle the team played with throughout the day.
