Leary’s First Book a Must Read

CONNOR MADIGAN ’11

Denis Leary is an actor, comedian, and now, author. Why We Suck is a harsh look at American’s limited brain capacity and lifestyle, generally how we suck. His outlook on our fellow countrymen is frank and usually offensive, but it will leave you needing a change in pants. Leary’s massive ADD moments lead him to drugs, hockey, and his love of Oprah.

Leary is a home grown hero born in Worcester, Massachusetts. He went to Emerson College where he started performing comedic routines. He is most famous for his “No Cure For Cancer”  stand up routine and the TV show Rescue Me. Some of his favorite subjects are smoking, death, the Irish, obnoxious children, death, his mother, and the death of the Irish.

To capture his type of humor, here is a quick quote from Leary about life:

“Most people think life sucks, and then you die. Not me. I beg to differ. I think life sucks, then you get cancer, then your dog dies, your wife leaves you, the cancer goes into remission, you get a new dog, you get remarried, you owe ten million dollars in medical bills but you work hard for thirty-five years and you pay it back and then — one day — you have a massive stroke, your whole right side is paralyzed, you have to limp along the streets and speak out of the left side of your mouth and drool but you go into rehabilitation and regain the power to walk and the power to talk and then — one day — you step off a curb at Sixty-seventh Street, and BANG you get hit by a city bus and then you die. Maybe.”- Denis Leary

His comedy might not be for everyone. However if you are anything like me, you will laugh until last year’s milk comes squirting from your nose or his ideas will haunt your dreams indefinitely. In any case, this book will change your life. Should his ideas about our society depress you in any way, realize that this is a satirical work. If you do read this book by Dr. Denis Leary- yes, he is a doctor- take it with a grain of salt; his research comes down to Googling what he doesn’t know.
